Planting for Climate Change: Designing a Drought Tolerant Garden

With the hottest days globally on record this past year, we are seeing a drastic change in our landscapes.

Xeriscaping with native plants is an advantageous way to mitigate climate change. These gardens are low maintenance & drought tolerant, with the most crucial factor being water conservation. These gardens may require minimal effort and yet they still provide beneficial habitat for pollinators & wildlife.

Choose drought tolerant, full sun plants to make this garden thrive.

Native plants like:

Pearly everlasting

Stonecrop

Fireweed

Grasses- bunchgrasses

Yarrow

Pacific Aster

Wooly sunflower

Other drought tolerant pollinator plants:

Echinacea

Chives

Sage

Lavender

Oregano

Fun annuals:

Alyssum

Calendula

Chamomile

Cosmos

Nasturtium

Marigold

Please Note: These gardens will still need to be watered in their first year until they are established. mulching your garden aids in this, as it helps hold in moisture in the soil.

Another tip: garden installations do best when planted in the  fall. This allows the plant to get more established over the rainy seasons, so that once warm weather hits again, these guys are steps closer to being drought tolerant.
